02/17 ATHENS: FORMAL/SPONTANEOUS

Anafiotika

ANAFIOTIKA. District of Athens on the north side of the Acropolis. Under Turkish rule, and later, this area was known as ‘Mavres Pe- tres’ (Black Stones). In antiquity, following a pronouncement from the Oracle of Delphi, habitation there was already prohibited. This prohibition was, however, violated during the Peloponnesian War, when, during a Spartan attack on Attica, its inhabitants came inside the city walls of Athens and then, there being no other space, the settlement of refugees on this side of the Acropolis was permitted. Later, under Turkish rule, it was inhabited by labourers, including slaves from Egypt.
