Section on the City 1:5, 2015

Konstantinos Chatzaras

The project is a study on the contemporary metropolis, the crisis of public space and the iconic architectural object. It integrates the conclusions of the author’s essay ‘Architecture as the City’. The project deals with the metropolitan area of Patissia, Athens, formerly the main entry to the city centre. Patissia gathers 45% of the population of the Athens Municipality in an area of 3km2, leaving minimum traces of what used to be. It consists of homogeneous urban blocks with mostly residential buildings that would be described as vernacular. Their repetition forms a dense grid largely impenetrable at its limits.
